Memories of Murder is loosely adapted from a series of serial murders within the span of 1986-1991 in Hwaseong, South Korea. Considering this was Bong Joon-ho's second feature-length film, the talent, and mastery we know of him today were readily on display despite taking place at the beginning of his career. With Parasite getting the attention it deserves, I'd argue it's Memories of Murder that deserves an equal amount of praise. If there's a singular film that is considered essential, it's Bong Joon-ho's Memories of Murder. Lee Chang-dong's Burning (2018), Na Hong-Jin's The Wailing (2016), Kim Jee-woon's I Saw the Devil (2010), Bong Joon-ho's Mother (2009), and Park Chan-wook's Oldboy (2003) are all films I implore you to seek out. With a broader audience, older South Korean films have reached new audiences as well.

Since then, South Korean entertainment has reached larger audiences with the success of Netflix's Squid Game and Park Chan-wook's Decision to Leave (2022). The film garnered a significant amount of attention in the domestic market and eventually won Best Picture in the 2020 Academy Awards, becoming the first non-English film to win the award. Over the course of five weeks, I'd like to discuss a singular film that changed my understanding of what films can be on a professional/personal level, the first of which is a South Korean investigative crime thriller, Memories of Murder.

When integrating my thoughts and opinions into a coherent discussion, I found it especially difficult to narrow my choices down to just five entries. I made it my life's mission to experience as many films as possible from diverse areas of the world, regardless of the time period. For me, movies are a way to entertain, inform, and inspire.

I still like my tragic ending but this blew my mind haha.Cinema has been an integral part of my life dating back to my childhood. I talked to a friend recently who interpreted it differently and said that Kim Byeong-soo is already dead in the end (hence walking through the tunnel and seeing Min Tae-joo). Another popular theory is that it really was all in Kim’s head. My interpretation is that all the events really happened and that he successfully killed Min Tae-joo, but he cannot remember what happened and is doomed to live with unresolved pain for the rest of his time. However, I think the ending makes Kim Byeong-soo more of a tragic hero.

I do think the movie could have ended after the final fight scene when everyone was on the floor. The film kept me guessing and I have mixed feelings about the ending, but I like it for the most part. At the end, Kim Byeong-soo tells himself not to trust his memory, and that Min Tae-joo is still alive. I've read some reviews that call the film predictable and say that the ending was unsatisfactory and confusing. He acted well in almost all the scenes, but his explanation scene could have been much more convincing. (Edit: After reading a comment on this blog post though, I see this could be an interpretation implying that Min and Kim are the same person.) Min also didn't have a good reason for being the antagonist his explanation seemed very cliche and boring. I thought the latter was unnecessary (laughable, even) and there just for shock value. Some parts that seemed a bit unnecessary include the drawn-out poetry lesson scenes and the scene where Min detaches a small section of his head.
